The Youth Zone is our before and after school program that enables working parents to know that their child is safe and supported in the hours leading up to and following their school day. Children have an opportunity to spend mornings and afternoons with friends in an environment that is fun, friendly, and relaxing.
Before and After School Program Considerations
When selecting a before and after school program for school-age children, parents should consider several key factors to ensure their child’s safety, well-being, and developmental needs are met. Research from Yale University suggests that before and after school programs that focus on social and behavioral development are actually more beneficial to kids than those that focus on academics. At The Merit School, we strive to provide balanced before and after school programs to ensure that every child benefits.

Program Structure and Activities:
Before and after school care should offer a balanced mix of activities to inspire children without causing burnout. A well-rounded program should offer a variety of activities that cater to different interests and developmental stages. Here are some key types of activities offered by The Merit School in our Youth Zone program:
- Physical Activities: Include games, sports, and outdoor play to help children expend energy and stay physically active.
- Creative Activities: Offer arts and crafts, music, and drama (e.g., plays / skits) to encourage creativity and self-expression.
- Academic Support: Provide a dedicated space to do homework and educational games to reinforce learning in a low-pressure environment.
- Social Activities: Facilitate group games and team projects to develop social skills and foster friendships.
- Relaxation Time: Allow for quiet time with books or simple, calming activities to help children unwind and recharge.
These activities should be varied and flexible, catering to different interests and energy levels, ensuring that children remain engaged and enthusiastic without feeling overwhelmed. As nourishment and nutrition are critical to these goals, breakfast and an after-school snack are also provided.
Transportation and Location:
Proximity to the child’s school and home can greatly impact convenience and the child’s daily routine. Parents should check if the program provides safe transportation to and from school, and whether the facility’s location aligns with their daily schedules.
Hours of Operation:
The availability of the program should match the parents’ work hours and any additional time needed for commuting.
